CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT?

I often say to my dog, “Oh how I wish you can tell me what you want.”  I usually smirk at him and think how silly I am.  But in reality this may sound sillier that it is, as you can dog train your best friend to tell you when he wants to go out to potty – that’s close enough.

Training your dog to ring a bell when he or she wants to go out to potty is a technique used by many dog owners.  As hard as it sounds, this is in fact a fairly easy trick as long as your dog is fully housetrained.  You will need a bell, a piece of string, patience and treats.  Tie the bell to a door knob, and make your dog “nose” the bell, then immediately open door and let him out.  Have your dog “nose” the bell every time he wants to go out.  You must be consistent and it will work, if you let him skip the ringing here and there he will only get confused.  If you want to reward him do so only after he relieves himself.    You’ll see in no time your dog will tell you what he wants.
