Company Fined for Ladder Fall Tragedy

A record court settlement of $48 million was awarded to a worker in Indiana last Thursday. The worker was paralyzed from the waste down after falling from a ladder covered with refractory concrete. The court cited subcontractor Minteq International for negligence attributing 50% of the fault to them and 50% to ISG Burns Harbor — now ArcelorMittal. Falling from ladders is a common hazard. Other ladder related injuries occur due to dropped tools or materials and using metal ladders in electrical environments. The court award underlines the importance of offering Ladder Safety training to workers. They need to know how use ladders safely: to transport and set up ladders properly, recognize problem situations, and know what to do to avoid or correct them.
