The John Day Fossil Beds Monument consists of three different areas, each with its own unique fossils and geological features. You may wish to start your tour of the Fossil Beds at the Sheep Rock Unit. There is a Paleontology Center here that can provide you with a great deal of background and a good introduction to the John Day Fossil Beds areas.The Painted Hills with their red, black, yellow and grey colored undulations are perhaps the most well known and popular Units within the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.
